Wrinkles and Skin Cancer: Avoid Them Both with Special Foundation

by Edie on May 20th, 2008

Did you know that May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month?  Did you know that the sun is the single biggest culprit when it comes to wrinkles?  Did you know that the sun is damaging your skin and putting you at risk for both skin cancer and wrinkles even on cold and overcast days?

UVB Rays

Short wavelength UVB rays are the tanning rays, and they’re most prevalent when the sun is out in full force, like on hot, sunny days.  In addition to a nice tan, exposure to UVB can also lead to skin cancer.  As a Californian and a former sun worshiper who has spent lots of time purposely exposing my skin to the sun, I know this is not what either of us wants to hear, but it’s true.

UVA Rays

Longer wavelength UVA rays reach deep into the skin tissue, breaking down the skin’s elasticity, causing wrinkles, and also contributing to your risk of skin cancer.  UVA rays are present all day, every day, no matter what the weather.  You’re even exposed to them inside your house as they come in through the windows.

What You Can Do

That means in order to protect yourself, you need to wear SPF protection every single day.  The best and most effective way to do that is to wear a foundation with the SPF protection built in.  Try to get something with at least SPF 30.  Wearing two separate products on your face, one for SPF protection and one for color, can dilute the SPF to a lesser concentration, so try to get an all-in-one product.

Like this chantecaille gel foundation makeup with SPF protection at eluxury.com.  Not only is it SPF 30, it’s noncomedogenic and moisturizing, and no animal testing is done for this product.  It also comes in this very pretty portable compact, so you can take it everywhere you go.

You don’t have to buy this particular product to protect yourself from harmful solar rays.  There are many SPF makeup and skin care products on the market, so look around, and try to find the best ones for you.

Why Are We Even Talking About This?

So what does this have to do with a formal fashion blog?  Looking fabulous on your date or at your special event starts with healthy skin.  And, um, being alive doesn’t hurt either.  So start taking care of your skin today.

If you’d like to learn more, Bahama Bronze Tanning has an informative article regarding UVA vs. UVB on their website.
